Falling in Love and Other Drownings

Have I forgotten who I am?

Yes, you are like that.
You wonder why I kiss you.

It’s to forget,
to drive away the distance,
to dissolve the shore,
to remember terns,
and how you forgot
the first time we met.
You thought at a party.

I know it was in deeper water.
A recognition that things fly away
never to return.
That we drown when we least expect it.
That nothing is ever read twice
the same way,
and no person is the same
the second time they meet.

But it is a secret.
Not mine to tell.

Be happy my wonderful face,
my beautiful soul.
You think the sky is infinite.
I know it measures how far we fall.
