My First Day at School

I feel greatly happy!
My feet are wet.
The sky is all torn up in clouds.
Why is there so much green?
Why not blue trees
and yellow dirt?
How do hands hold sound
when they cover the ears?
Like puddles of noise
in a seashell’s home.

This morning children went to school
before summer had a chance to end.
What will they find inside
that’s not outside,
even better in the sun?
Am I younger than I was?
Can I play as much as ever”
I would dearly love to start again.
A first day at school,
and later,
join the world at recess
wearing brand new shoes.
