Mary

I ask only beauty from the silence of the day.
I want to be with you,
watch you open its package,
greet it with expectation,
put sorrow behind you, and distance.
No one can take your gentleness from you.
No one can make you angry,
your heart is too wide, too forgiving.
Hate is your enemy.

I have walked through storms to see you.
Watched the clock count centuries
in your absence.
Found no sweetness greater than your lips.
You are a basket of flowers,
and none of them are more beautiful
than your smile,
more touching than your gaze,
which wants me only to hold you,
as gently,
as the sunrise dancing in the east.
