I love earth
for the sweetness of children.
The inarticulate taste
of water.
The roundness of apples.
Sunshine hiding in the grass
like fire.
The way birds defy gravity.
The gift of stone’s endurance.
How snakes embrace the ground
and teach me humility.
A strand of grass,
an eyelid opening.
Touch, for touching someone else.
A place inside the heart
that’s always home.
I love the earth for sleep,
for waking,
for no accounting of the hours
making dreams,
or skipping stones.
For Earth’s Sweetness
