{"id":1026,"date":"2010-12-28T21:08:49","date_gmt":"2010-12-28T20:08:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w7m.3ee.myftpupload.com\/?p=1026"},"modified":"2010-12-28T21:08:49","modified_gmt":"2010-12-28T20:08:49","slug":"big-island","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theodorewaterfield.com\/?p=1026","title":{"rendered":"Big Island"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was called Big Island,<br \/>\nbut was only a patch of woods<br \/>\nand marsh at the end of the bay.<br \/>\nSkiffs were sometimes seen<br \/>\nmoving among the marsh grass.<br \/>\nPeople fished there in peace.<br \/>\nWhy a spot becomes isolated in a town<br \/>\nor along the traffic of a road<br \/>\nis always a story.<br \/>\nAlways a mystery that keeps to itself.<\/p>\n<p>Dad knew the whole history of the place.<br \/>\nWhy people went there and left.<br \/>\nIt had the quality of a house<br \/>\nleft to itself.<br \/>\nAn abandoned place where the wind<br \/>\nblew through the door,<br \/>\nand no one shut it.<br \/>\nWhen my grandmother grew old<br \/>\nand wandered in her thoughts,<br \/>\nDad thought, with his brother Si,<br \/>\nto build a little house there for her,<br \/>\nwhere she could tend a table,<br \/>\nand boil her coffee.<br \/>\nKeep house as it were<br \/>\nuntil there was nothing left<br \/>\nbut shadows,<br \/>\nlike the color of pewter,<br \/>\nsoft, with twilight inside it.<br \/>\nWhere there\u2019s no place to go.<br \/>\nNo idea to play with.<\/p>\n<p>I go to Big Island,<br \/>\nwhere there is marsh grass,<br \/>\nand some protection by the City<br \/>\nnow to keep it.<br \/>\nAnd I can put my arm around<br \/>\nNan\u2019s shoulders,<br \/>\nand look through the reeds, at the bay,<br \/>\nand say to myself and my grandmother,<br \/>\nthis is a good place for pillows<br \/>\nand dreams,<br \/>\nand somehow<br \/>\nwhat the world is made of in ourselves.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It was called Big Island, but was only a patch of woods and marsh at the end of the bay.
