I am holding a congress for my friends.
\nA large hall with extra chairs,
\nbecause no one is excluded.
\nI left notices everywhere saying,
\ndear friend, please come to the congress.
\nThen I threw them in the sky
\nto be airmailed over fences,
\nby strawberries at the market,
\nunder the bright edge of the door
\nat night.
\nI wrote some on napkins,
\nunder wine opening its eyes in a glass.
\nI telegraphed calls down lanes,
\nopen streets, to parks and shores,
\nwherever friends might be, have gone.<\/p>\n
I threw bottles by the dozen
\ninto the sea,
\nalong the shore,
\nfrom ferry boats and canoes.
\nWho knows where life has taken them.
\nI left notes by graves,
\nnear rocks, holes of trees,
\nfor the so inclined.
\nI was catholic in my choice of friends.
\nAll shapes and sizes,
\nordinary, extraordinary,
\nsane or off.
\nI loved them all,
\nand so many.<\/p>\n
All I could do was call out
\non windy days,
\nnames that came out yelling
\nfrom my heart.
\nDear friends who I loved,
\nwas in love with,
\nwho let me smile
\nthinking of them before my sleep.
\nEncountering them in my dreams,
\nwatching their faces fade from sight
\nwhen I woke.
\nCome to my congress.
\nWorld leaders of my world.
