A brass band played at my birth!
\nTrumpets and cymbals,
\nand a brother like myself
\njoined my entrance to the world.
\nThis really happened,
\nthough I do not remember it.
\nIt is a fact, a myth, a legend,
\nbut most of all a fact,
\nand I wonder
\nif a band will play when I die.
\nIf the bandmaster would be so kind,
\nand fate so kind,
\nthat trumpets and cymbals
\nwould announce my end,
\nthe scattering of the light,
\nthe blue tide of night
\nentering my lips.<\/p>\n
Who can brag that a band did marches,
\nand the world announced itself,
\nand ages later,
\nI would think back on my ticketless soul,
\nand wonder.
\nWill a band be nearby,
\nin a field,
\nthe sun glittering like a brass cymbal,
\nringing in my ears,
\nto play the last tune,
\nthe exit march,
\nand the air
