{"id":1176,"date":"2011-02-21T01:51:50","date_gmt":"2011-02-21T00:51:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w7m.3ee.myftpupload.com\/?p=1176"},"modified":"2011-02-21T01:51:50","modified_gmt":"2011-02-21T00:51:50","slug":"children-waiting-at-the-nursing-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theodorewaterfield.com\/?p=1176","title":{"rendered":"Children Waiting at the Nursing Home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I come back to them<br \/>\nagain and again.<br \/>\nEyes stare fixedly out the window<br \/>\nwrapped in their solitudes.<br \/>\nI want to know their names.<br \/>\nA pole star for each one.<br \/>\nThe little girls pretty in their dresses.<br \/>\nThe boys covered with grass stains<br \/>\nand mud.<br \/>\nWhy do I wish their mothers<br \/>\nwere waving at them?<br \/>\nTheir fathers taking time from work<br \/>\nto spend an hour on the playground?<\/p>\n<p>Why should I care<br \/>\nthat children get lost<br \/>\nand tangled in the years?<br \/>\nThat all of us get denied growing up.<br \/>\nIt was what we wanted then.<br \/>\nI\u2019m a big boy, the little boy bragged.<br \/>\nI\u2019m a mama, said the girl<br \/>\nas she hugged her doll.<br \/>\nThe years picked us up.<br \/>\nWe changed and loved the change<br \/>\nas we grew taller,<br \/>\nfaster,<br \/>\nlearned to read,<br \/>\nwent off by ourselves and explored.<\/p>\n<p>Life happened.<br \/>\nThe sky was blue every day.<br \/>\nThe rain soaked our clothes.<br \/>\nOur feet smelled of mud and grass.<br \/>\nAnd we were never angry for long.<br \/>\nSo hungry we could not cry.<br \/>\nHurt so bad we did not heal.<\/p>\n<p>But the poetess knows,<br \/>\nwho looks from the window now,<br \/>\nshe has a broken wing.<br \/>\nThe man who gets outside<br \/>\nin his chair<br \/>\nno longer looks up,<br \/>\nunable to see.<br \/>\nGray-haired friends share lunch<br \/>\nand forget who they are,<br \/>\nlike lights blinking on and off,<br \/>\nand the children that they were<br \/>\nwant to go home.<br \/>\nWant Mama to come.<\/p>\n<p>Look outside for their boyfriends<br \/>\nand girlfriends,<br \/>\nwondering if the pet\u2019s been watered.<br \/>\nAnd why,<br \/>\nsitting so still,<br \/>\nthey can not breathe<br \/>\nwhen they used to run everywhere.<br \/>\nAs a visitor,<br \/>\nI dare not tell them<br \/>\nwhere the class is going.<br \/>\nWhy the bell never rings<br \/>\nto let them leave.<br \/>\nThat they are still beautiful,<br \/>\nand,<br \/>\nI\u2019m sure,<br \/>\nsomeone\u2019s waiting for them<br \/>\nat the door.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I come back to them again and again.
