\nWhich came first?
\nAnd the Word said, taxes.
\nBut in the beginning
\nthere was nothing to levy
\nand the Word,
\nwhich was oblivion,
\nremained empty.
\nIt complained of hunger
\nto creation.
\nWhat do I do, it asked.<\/p>\n
And creation,
\nnoting the problem,
\nfilled it with life,
\nand said to oblivion
\ngo forward,
\nhave children,
\ngrow towns and villages,
\nfill them with a multitude.
\nAnd it came to pass,
\nand the multitude
\nexpressed their debt of gratitude
\nfor the good fortune
\nof their lives.<\/p>\n
Then creation paused
\nin recognition
\nand,
\non the first day of seven
\nprinted forms
\ncreated an army of tax collectors,
\nlaws and penalties,
\ndates due for compliance.
\nThen thundered,
\nthe cost of living
\nis now righteously computed,
\nwhat life owes
\nand may render to oblivion.<\/p>\n
Taxes for being born,
\nbreathing,
\nthe beneficence of love
\nand death,
\nto be collected,
\nnow a law of the universe,
\nforever levied
