{"id":1230,"date":"2011-03-10T20:35:08","date_gmt":"2011-03-10T19:35:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w7m.3ee.myftpupload.com\/?p=1230"},"modified":"2011-03-10T20:35:08","modified_gmt":"2011-03-10T19:35:08","slug":"the-city-of-feathers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theodorewaterfield.com\/?p=1230","title":{"rendered":"The City of Feathers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I tore the vine off the chimney,<br \/>\nan overgrowth of years,<br \/>\nstrand by strand,<br \/>\nthe venous structure of an aviary.<br \/>\nSparrow nests, dead grass,<br \/>\npieces of tinfoil,<br \/>\nlint of dust and concrete,<br \/>\nand the smell of musk.<\/p>\n<p>There were homes inside this debris.<br \/>\nI had waited.<br \/>\nYoung birds had to be raised,<br \/>\nshade was needed in the summer.<br \/>\nIn the fall,<br \/>\nshelter from the rain and cold.<br \/>\nI saw the birds come and go,<br \/>\nrearing their families,<br \/>\nsnuggling,<br \/>\ncalling out in the night.<\/p>\n<p>This was home,<br \/>\nperched on a cliff,<br \/>\na fall into the sea.<br \/>\nWhat was I to do?<br \/>\nTheir lives were clear<br \/>\nas the transparency of a pool,<br \/>\nthe sharpness of an iris,<br \/>\nthe sky where they never fell.<\/p>\n<p>Only I threatened them,<br \/>\nheld back by compassion, pity,<br \/>\nsomething that understood their lives<br \/>\nbut not its own.<br \/>\nAnd then,<br \/>\nin the spring,<br \/>\nbefore life renewed itself,<br \/>\nI struck,<br \/>\npulling the city to shreds,<br \/>\nleaving the stone bare,<br \/>\nand finished.<br \/>\nI went into my kitchen,<br \/>\nsipped coffee,<br \/>\nand wondered,<br \/>\nwhat is my destiny?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I tore the vine off the chimney, an overgrowth of years, strand by strand, the venous structure of an aviary.
