I have committed treason
\nwith myself.
\nGoing back over old poems,
\nfinding the address
\nof where I come from.
\nThe messages I carved
\nin my soul.
\nTed loves life.
\nTed has learned to read.
\nHe found a sky full of words.
\nHeard the earth sing in his ears.
\nWatched the fragments of summer
\nfall around his shoes in autumn.
\nLeft a note for a girl
\nhe\u2019ll never meet.
\nFound a woman he adores.
\nGot lost in the night
\nand never returned.<\/p>\n
Now, having read these things,
\nand hundreds of others,
\nI blush with embarrassment,
\nshudder at the pain,
\nwonder if joy rings like a bell,
\nrain is the wine of forever.
\nIf the future is an end
\nfinding a beginning,
\nand the end is the sound
\nof doors closing.
\nTo which,
\nI declare my allegiance
\nto earth over,
\nfor reasons unclear to myself.
\nBut hearing the past
\nfind me now,
\nis like the momentary warmth
\nof an empty bed,
