We go from bed to bed

\nwhen sleep plays possum
\nand narcolepsy
\nbecomes the disease of choice.
\nNot the pain of an arthritic shoulder,
\nlooking for a mattress
\nwhose hands are firmer.
\nIn which case
\nI pass Mary in the hall,
\nchanting the song of insomnia,
\ncan\u2019t sleep, can\u2019t sleep,
\nheading for the other bed.<\/p>\n
And we pass in the night
\ntwo star-crossed lovers
\ndoomed to solitude.
\nLater,
\nlike weary travelers
\nwe pass again,
\nmuttering our sad litany,
\ncan\u2019t sleep, can\u2019t sleep,
\nin search of our vanished rest.
\nAnd I wonder
\nWhat do bears do
\nin their caves,
\nsquirrels in the trees,
\nrabbits in their burrows,
\nwhen their bodies ache,
\ntheir minds go off,
\nand they stroll
\nthrough dark ravines.
\nHop from branch to branch,
\ntrade tunnels,
\nuntil dawn breaks,
\nand they wonder
