{"id":1476,"date":"2016-08-31T00:19:25","date_gmt":"2016-08-30T23:19:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w7m.3ee.myftpupload.com\/?p=1476"},"modified":"2016-08-26T16:03:09","modified_gmt":"2016-08-26T15:03:09","slug":"summer-in-sandusky","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theodorewaterfield.com\/?p=1476","title":{"rendered":"Summer in Sandusky"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sandusky is changing,<br \/>\nputting on a new face.<br \/>\nParks have replaced fisheries,<br \/>\nsuburbs,<br \/>\nthe corn and wheat.<br \/>\nThe giant elms have long since vanished,<br \/>\nand the malls<br \/>\nhave become mini circuses.<\/p>\n<p>Even the Soldier\u2019s Home,<br \/>\na campus of gray limestone<br \/>\nwith its hundred buckeye trees,<br \/>\nis a denuded memorial.<br \/>\nReplica of the Civil War,<br \/>\nhousing old men<br \/>\nwho stay indoors for shade,<br \/>\nspeak in whispers,<br \/>\nas if prisoners<br \/>\nof their own government.<\/p>\n<p>The town has lived two centuries<br \/>\nand never matured.<br \/>\nNo cathedral or stately avenue of homes.<br \/>\nInlets dotted with battlements,<br \/>\nstatues gathering moss<br \/>\nor bleached by wind.<br \/>\nA town that never held a ball,<br \/>\ndanced through the years,<br \/>\ngave its youth balloons and confections.<\/p>\n<p>But the wind<br \/>\ncurls over waves bearded with foam,<br \/>\nthe bay howls and sighs,<br \/>\nwith a purity of place,<br \/>\nstones set together,<br \/>\nmoldering iron,<br \/>\nlight rising from its face,<br \/>\nsinging the song of summer.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sandusky is changing, putting on a new face.
