{"id":1505,"date":"2014-10-22T01:13:13","date_gmt":"2014-10-22T00:13:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w7m.3ee.myftpupload.com\/?p=1505"},"modified":"2014-10-20T23:19:43","modified_gmt":"2014-10-20T22:19:43","slug":"the-artist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theodorewaterfield.com\/?p=1505","title":{"rendered":"The Artist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I knew a man<br \/>\nwho had a word for everything.<br \/>\nCould paint pictures on stone,<br \/>\ncarve epigrams in wood,<br \/>\ncapture tenses,<br \/>\nand like fence,<br \/>\nblock everything out.<br \/>\nHe could sum a clue<br \/>\ninto an answer,<br \/>\nand people were amazed.<\/p>\n<p>He was an artist.<br \/>\nHe found the heart of a matter,<br \/>\nlifted wiggling from the chest,<br \/>\npulsating with the fury<br \/>\nof its empty chambers.<\/p>\n<p>But speaking to him<br \/>\nI found the number of words he used<br \/>\nfilled only a page,<br \/>\nwere only flourishes.<br \/>\nA boy of five had more,<br \/>\nand his adoring subjects<br \/>\ncould fill books.<\/p>\n<p>He was a mime<br \/>\nwhen he used language.<br \/>\nHe waved his hands like wands,<br \/>\ngrimaced outrageously,<br \/>\ndanced as he spoke,<br \/>\npounded a tree,<br \/>\nwept tears at a slight,<br \/>\nhummed with joy.<\/p>\n<p>He was a show,<br \/>\norchestra and conductor,<br \/>\nso no one noticed<br \/>\nthe few words he had.<br \/>\nBut he understood edges and lines,<br \/>\ncold and wet,<br \/>\npain and sorrow.<br \/>\nThe empty places between thoughts,<br \/>\nthe fullness of silence,<br \/>\nthe rumble of rain.<br \/>\nAnd people found him articulate,<br \/>\nmissing nothing,<br \/>\ncapturing all nuance,<br \/>\nleading them to mystery.<\/p>\n<p>And he was a man without language<br \/>\nin the usual sense.<br \/>\nHis arm would encircle you,<br \/>\nand you knew what he knew.<br \/>\nHis eyes would gaze rapturously<br \/>\nand you saw what he saw.<br \/>\nHis lips would purse<br \/>\nand carry the day.<br \/>\nHe invented a language<br \/>\nthat everyone heard,<br \/>\nand when he died,<br \/>\npeople said,<br \/>\nhe had a way with words.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I knew a man who had a word for everything.
