There is a beach
\na mile wide,
\nthat borders on the Pacific,
\na huge emptiness,
\nlike a gray sky of measureless gloom.
\nPerhaps it was the time I found it,
\nand the cold, damp breath of the evening,
\nand the lines of dark epiphanies
\nfrom receding tides.
\nAs if the ocean hesitated and would move,
\npause, and withdraw,
\nand I was amazed at the solitude.<\/p>\n
A fire to the north,
\na pinprick of light,
\na stray burning butterfly on the sand,
\nbut the rest,
\nonly sea and shore.
\nAnd the great prairie of distance
\nand fuzzy fog.
\nSo it was I saw the greatest beach
\nhugging the greatest ocean,
\nand felt an immense and vacant hollow,
\nand knew peace
\nas I\u2019ve never known it,
\nand life as it would be,
