\nI love Georgia in the summer,
\nbut it does get hot!
\nThe air can get so oppressive.
\nIt\u2019s like the moss on the trees.
\nWhen I\u2019m at Bonaventure Cemetery
\nthe ground is so cool, I think,
\nchild,
\nif I have to go,
\nput me in this pretty place
\nand have a Koolaid.
\nI wouldn\u2019t mind if you sat on my stone,
\nknow what I mean?
\nAnd pass the time awhile.<\/p>\n
My grandmother used to come and stay,
\nand tell me,
\nnow child, run and play,
\nI\u2019m talking to your grandfather
\nand some of it\u2019s not meant
\nfor little ears.
\nBut I hid behind a stone
\nand listened anyway,
\nbut I never heard my grandfather talk,
\nand my grandmother cried a little bit,
\npaying the rent and family things.
\nI liked it when she talked about me.
\nShe called me angel pie,
\nand sometimes
\nI hinted that I heard,
\nand she thought I was hearing ghosts,
\nand asked me
\nto tell her what I heard.
\nIt was a game we played.
\nBut I knew it wasn\u2019t for her.<\/p>\n
She missed my grandfather,
\nand sometimes fell asleep,
\nand I\u2019d be alarmed and think she died,
\nand I said, Grandma,
\nit ain\u2019t time yet,
\nyou\u2019re breathing!
\nAnd she\u2019d wake and hold me,
\nand we\u2019d walk home to Bull Street,
\nand she\u2019d pour me another
\nglass of Koolaid,
\nand sing to herself.
\nThat\u2019s how I remember her,
