{"id":1698,"date":"2016-09-28T01:26:34","date_gmt":"2016-09-28T00:26:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w7m.3ee.myftpupload.com\/?p=1698"},"modified":"2016-09-20T01:38:02","modified_gmt":"2016-09-20T00:38:02","slug":"rest-awhile","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theodorewaterfield.com\/?p=1698","title":{"rendered":"Rest Awhile"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FROM THE &#8220;SAVANNAH IDYL&#8221; COLLECTION<\/p>\n<p>I rest sometimes.<br \/>\nI\u2019m not old,<br \/>\nI just rest and let the day have itself.<br \/>\nUp north no one stops,<br \/>\nfeels the moss,<br \/>\nlets time go by under their fingers.<br \/>\nHow does life go on with them?<br \/>\nWhistling past a window.<\/p>\n<p>The South learned its lesson<br \/>\na long time ago.<br \/>\nWhen it almost died.<br \/>\nWhen the dead outnumbered everybody alive.<br \/>\nWhen it seemed only the children were left<br \/>\nand the town took a nap in the afternoon<br \/>\nto let the mothers grieve.<\/p>\n<p>I suppose then it became a habit to stop,<br \/>\nsit on the stoop,<br \/>\ntalk to one another.<br \/>\nPlay checkers if it so sufficed,<br \/>\nor just let yourself fill with words,<br \/>\nargue with your Daddy,<br \/>\nremember your Mama,<br \/>\nand watch flowers bloom at your feet.<\/p>\n<p>Something to admire in the afternoon.<br \/>\nTo see how the world lives.<br \/>\nHow it lets go and becomes pretty.<br \/>\nGets out of the way.<br \/>\nLets people go past and say to yourself,<br \/>\nwhen she was a girl she was a sunflower.<br \/>\nEven on rainy days she shone.<br \/>\nNow she\u2019s a cloud with hair all silver.<br \/>\nI\u2019ll ask her sometime how her brother\u2019s doing,<br \/>\nand maybe<br \/>\nwe\u2019ll sit and enjoy Savannah,<br \/>\nlike two old tombstones flirting with<br \/>\neach other.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FROM THE &#8220;SAVANNAH IDYL&#8221; COLLECTION I rest sometimes.
