{"id":1764,"date":"2016-10-06T01:50:14","date_gmt":"2016-10-06T00:50:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w7m.3ee.myftpupload.com\/?p=1764"},"modified":"2016-09-20T01:45:33","modified_gmt":"2016-09-20T00:45:33","slug":"the-parade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theodorewaterfield.com\/?p=1764","title":{"rendered":"The Parade"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I watched the caravan of a dead war,<br \/>\nwhen I was ten.<br \/>\nLong streamers of jeeps and trucks<br \/>\npassing on the street.<br \/>\nThe pulsation of a heart beat,<br \/>\nrumble of violence,<br \/>\nlike the moving of a river<br \/>\nunder a bridge,<br \/>\na storm descending on little Sandusky,<br \/>\na speck of dust in mighty America.<br \/>\nSeaport on Lake Erie.<br \/>\nI sat on a curb with Mickey,<br \/>\nmy twin, bored<br \/>\nby the brownness of the paint,<br \/>\nthe color of the apocalypse.<br \/>\nThe end to the greatest carnage<br \/>\nin history.<\/p>\n<p>That our gifted brother was dead<br \/>\nbecause of this, was another part<br \/>\nof us.<br \/>\nOnly later did I understand how<br \/>\nuprooted we are.<br \/>\nHow damaged our family was.<br \/>\nHow radioactive grief can be<br \/>\nwith a half life that reaches<br \/>\nto the end of our days.<br \/>\nFour boys graduated from high school<br \/>\nthrown in the fire,<br \/>\nthree deaths with the masque<br \/>\nof a monstrous regret for their dying.<br \/>\nOur star gazer a part of the darkness.<\/p>\n<p>For Mickey and myself<br \/>\nchildhood saved us.<br \/>\nInchoate gentleness saved us.<br \/>\nInnocence saved us.<br \/>\nTime saved us.<br \/>\nThe parade lasted days,<br \/>\nand was over.<br \/>\nWe went to the play park and played.<br \/>\nThere were no barbarians<br \/>\naround us.<br \/>\nNo genocidal soldiers.<br \/>\nThe Mikado stayed home.<br \/>\nNo Gestapo would hound our family.<br \/>\nI remember the puffballs<br \/>\nwe loved,<br \/>\nand the summer we lived.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I watched the caravan of a dead war, when I was ten.
