\nI do not know how.
\nI wrote a letter to myself,
\na note of remembrance,
\nand someone said, \u201cOh a poem!\u201d
\nAnd I ran away,
\nI closed the door.
\nI stuffed cotton in my ears.
\nI do not write poems, I said.
\nIn a whisper so they couldn\u2019t hear.
\nSo they wouldn\u2019t wake me
\nin my sleep.<\/p>\n
And thankfully they forgot.
\nI hid my letters.
\nI carried the moon
\nhidden in my pocket.
\nI spoke in higher decibels to the birds,
\nI rolled the sky up like blue fabric
\non hidden poles,
\nand lied about having no clothes.
\nEverything weaves itself,
\nthey didn\u2019t know how to gather it.
\nSo they got over the notion
\nI was a poet,
\nand I was left in peace.<\/p>\n
I tipped my hat to the true versifiers.
\nThey crunched over their desks.
\nRead their verses at coffee houses.
\nPublished each other in old books,
\nand I was glad.
\nWe had nothing in common.
\nArt was their profession,
\nlove was mine.<\/p>\n
I hid nothing from the world
\nso it visited often,
\nand I told it,
\nyou are incredibly good to me.
\nYou fill my mouth,
\nstay with me in the dark,
\ntalk to me in your shadows,
\nand someday
\nI\u2019d like to be a poet.<\/p>\n
Gather shells
\nand arrange them on the beach.
\nCall to the small things
\nto come and hear my tunes,
\nand tell everyone with beautiful eyes,
\nI will say a few words,
\nthat I can never have enough of you,
\nwho shine like rainbows
