The sea scattered its shells
\non the shore.
\nLoose chains,
\nnecklaces,
\nseaweed adorning the tide.
\nSome look like the fingernails
\nof mermaids,
\nlavender and pearl.
\nWe gathered a few.
\nMary walked in the foam
\nof the waves.
\nHer hair flew in the wind.
\nI covered my face against the sun.
\nIt suffers the wreckage of time,
\nthe paleness of a ship\u2019s figurehead,
\nlong exposed to voyages.<\/p>\n
I listened to the sea.
\nIs this where all the laughter goes?
\nThe relentless monotony of waves.
\nThe little tears inside shells.
\nTime added and subtracted
\nfrom the voice in the salt.
\nWhere does it take our shadows?
\nHow do they come back
\nafter we leave?
\nDoes the sea tell us in some
\nimponderable way,
\nstay a while.
\nSing with me.
\nSwim in the spume
\nand rise in the light
\nlike a gull
\nand wherever you go
