What moved the hands
\nthat nailed the boards
\nabove the lentil of my house?
\nThe planing of the doors,
\nthe careful carpentry of the windows?
\nPutting a soul together,
\nmuch as the sea
\ncarves its caves,
\na forest erects a canopy,
\nmountains fashion porches
\nfrom their overhangs.<\/p>\n
My house came into its life,
\nas people filled its rooms,
\nsharing the aroma of their bodies
\nwith the scent of its wood.
\nLeaving the touch of their fingers
\non its walls,
\ntracks on the stairs,
\nthe resonating echoes of their voices
\nin its rooms.<\/p>\n
Nothing is forgotten by the house.
\nAll the sadness
\nand joys of our lives are here.
\nIt welcomes our guests,
\nand people exclaim,
\nwhat a happy house!
\nas if hugged.
\nAnd I smile
\nwith a secret knowledge,
\nthat our house is alive
