I wonder if the little lady
\nmisses Bonaventure Cemetery.
\nShe stood there for forty eight years
\nholding up her plates,
\nas if you please,
\nshe had something for you.
\nAnd she did.
\nSweetness, charm.<\/p>\n
She\u2019d be there now
\nif the movies hadn\u2019t made a story
\nout of Savannah,
\nand that murder at Mercer House,
\ndepending on your point of view.
\nHer picture was on the fly jacket
\nof the book, \u201cMidnight In The Garden
\nof Good and Evil\u201d.
\nAs beautiful a title as I ever heard.<\/p>\n
Didn\u2019t hurt to be spooky either.
\nAnyway they took her away
\nfor her own protection,
\nand put her in the Telfair Museum of Art.
\nI never went to see her there.
\nIt ain\u2019t where she belongs.
\nShe lived in the cemetery
\nwith the moss and trees,
\nlike a little girl out of Eden.<\/p>\n
Folks come from far away
\nasking where she is.
\nWhen they ask me,
\nI tell them she\u2019s in the cemetery.
\nAnd I apologize.
\nDon\u2019t take long I guess
\nto know she\u2019s not there.
\nBut if they do find her,
\nthey know where she\u2019s coming from,
\nand that makes it all right.<\/p>\n
I loved that little lady.
\nI always said hello
\nand felt her welcoming me.
\nMaybe sometime
\nshe\u2019ll be back,
\npretty as an angel,
\nand I\u2019ll say hello,
\nand thank you for the smile
