Johnny Mercer gave a new name
\nto the Back River north of Savannah.
\nThat boy was a dream maker,
\nlike he said in his song Moon River,
\nand that old river was called
\nMoon River in his honor.
\nThat river empties in our hearts now.
\nWe loved it before,
\nbut now we see it Johnny\u2019s way,
\nand that\u2019s how names get started.
\nHow things come to be called.
\nAlways a reason somewhere for a name.<\/p>\n
There\u2019s something thoughtful
\nabout life here in Savannah.
\nThe poetry in our trees,
\nmoss, the way eyes catch the sun.
\nHow women flirt and peek aside at you.
\nCider and whiskey all at once.
\nRomance and bravery all at once.
\nWe\u2019re proud and have no bones about it.
\nCould say we paid a price for civilization.
\nShed our blood and came back.
\nNow and then
\nwhen the rain plays a tune outside,
\nI open the door to see it wash down,
\nsee the world shine,
\nand dazzle when it\u2019s over.
\nThat\u2019s what we are,
\ndreamers,
