JACK’S FIRST HOLY COMMUNION<\/p>\n
I tremble at the sublimity of the lesson.
\nWhat Jesus was teaching.
\nHow he rang the bell of our mortality
\nand understood,
\nit was not our lives at stake,
\nbut our children, and our children\u2019s children,
\nand my beloved next to me,
\nwho took a train not knowing our destination.
\nJesus poured compassion into a cup,
\nhis hands aching, and said,
\ndrink this in remembrance of me.
\nAnd the bell of his life resonating in ours.<\/p>\n
The evening supper goes on,
\nand he is saying, again and again,
\ndo not let your hearts become
\ndisconnected from your souls.
\nWe are creation.
\nWe honor each other with this communion.
\nBread is the sustenance for our
\nliving and dying.
\nThe wine is the millennia, and God\u2019s asking,
\ndo not forget each other in your prayers,
