{"id":2176,"date":"2016-11-11T03:26:46","date_gmt":"2016-11-11T02:26:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w7m.3ee.myftpupload.com\/?p=2176"},"modified":"2016-11-07T16:48:00","modified_gmt":"2016-11-07T15:48:00","slug":"sandusky","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theodorewaterfield.com\/?p=2176","title":{"rendered":"Sandusky"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I went back,<br \/>\nand took photographs of the past.<br \/>\nWhat\u2019s left of grass and old weed.<br \/>\nHouses that remain,<br \/>\nready to be called to oblivion,<br \/>\nthe house of my birth,<br \/>\nthe street of my childhood.<br \/>\nAncient memories.<br \/>\nGranite stones that glitter<br \/>\nwith quartz faces.<br \/>\nLooking down the deserted avenue<br \/>\nof Warren Street,<br \/>\nSandusky as it was,<br \/>\nold ghosts remaining there,<br \/>\nthe railroad tracks gone,<br \/>\nthe separated street<br \/>\njoined by a boulevard of gravel and weeds.<\/p>\n<p>My heart thins in the paleness of the sky.<br \/>\nIn the camera it is a vast emptiness.<br \/>\nA street somewhere in a place of empty wind.<br \/>\nOpen.<br \/>\nOpen as if everything was blowing away.<br \/>\nNothing brought back.<br \/>\nHouses being deserted.<br \/>\nWindows left open.<br \/>\nRafters howling above the vacant corners.<br \/>\nI was not lost.<br \/>\nI was not sad.<br \/>\nI felt nothing at all,<br \/>\nor at least nothing that wept,<br \/>\ncalled out,<br \/>\nhuddled from the openness.<\/p>\n<p>The people were gone,<br \/>\nthe houses made of cardboard,<br \/>\nmildewed,<br \/>\nsagging from the years.<br \/>\nI was not here<br \/>\nwhen the last soul deserted.<br \/>\nWhen someone with tired eyes<br \/>\ngazed at the street and died.<br \/>\nMy voice lost its sound.<br \/>\nMy lips did not move.<br \/>\nI did not call out<br \/>\nor tremble at my loss.<br \/>\nThe photographs will help me see<br \/>\nthe curtain of the day<br \/>\nclose on the bay.<br \/>\nRemind me of what happened.<\/p>\n<p>I remember the ephemeral dandelions,<br \/>\nviolets, pennies smashed on the rails<br \/>\nby the trains.<br \/>\nThe rest is the Pillars of Hercules,<br \/>\nthe lost country of childhood,<br \/>\nout into a clouded sea,<br \/>\nleaving behind these remains.<br \/>\nWhere is my home?<br \/>\nWhere are my loved ones?<br \/>\nWhere did daytime go?<br \/>\nIt is so open,<br \/>\nso barren,<br \/>\nso like an ocean rushing away,<br \/>\nas I look into the shutter,<br \/>\nand catch the last rays of sun,<br \/>\nfalling in the water.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I went back, and took photographs of the past.
