I recall as a child

\nI was a zither with strings.
\nI held planets in my hands
\nand called them stones.
\nI built roads of sand

No one told me I could not do things.
\nI had forgotten how to fly
\nand asked birds to show me again.
\nI climbed the branches of trees,
\nand told everyone,
\nhow high I\u2019d gone.
\nTouched the ceiling
\nwhere the sky looked down,

\nreturned to land,
\nwhere I dug holes in the ground,
\nto see how deep the earth could fall.<\/p>\n
So deep I was afraid
\nand filled it in,
\nand told stories
\nabout the centipedes and worms,
\nuntil I had grown twice as tall.
\nThen told others all the things I\u2019d read,
\nuntil someone yelled,
\ndon\u2019t you have something of your own
\nto tell?
\nOr must you always tell
\nwhat everyone else has done?<\/p>\n
Then,
\nashamed,
\nI no longer said what the earth
\nwas saying,
\nor how many places I had gone,
\nuntil one day
\nwhen no one listened,
\nI began to talk to myself alone,
\nand then to others who told me
\nsecrets of what they\u2019d learned,

\nI must be as them,
