A surface between ocean and air,
\nthis gray sad rain.
\nI saw this place when I was six,
\nin the first year of school,
\nwith crayons on my desk.
\n Looking at the darkness outside,
\nsmelling the oil of colors in the crayons,
\nnot understanding what life was
\nor would become.<\/p>\n
Only that I wished
\nto put my head on the desk
\nand close my eyes.
\nFind the sun inside,
\nthe freedom of the summer,
\nthe vines that trailed up the trees,
\nrunning down a gravel street,
\nlistening to trains.<\/p>\n
I can see the room in the window,
\nthe class intent on coloring.
\nMy classmates murmuring
\nbetween the desks,
\nand I am coloring with words,
\nalone in a lonely room,
