Long ago, chasing midnight
\non a plane to France,
\nI saw a sunrise,
\nsuch,
\nas I\u2019d never seen before.
\nAn escarpment of fire
\npurified by space,
\nall the rubies of Southeast Asia
\nlaying like a dragon on the horizon,
\nabove the haze
\nand mirrors of the Atlantic.
\nI saw the plutonium face
\nof the sun,
\nin the chamber of dawn.<\/p>\n
I was forlorn and tired,
\ntoo pale inside
\nto stand the light.
\nI closed my eyes
\nblotting out images of revelation.
\nI wanted only peace,
\nto be home
\nin the cool darkness of my bed.<\/p>\n
Away from the roar of engines,
\nthe sighs of strangers,
\ncoughing,
\nand rattling of paper,
\nwhile the tide pool of a star
\nwashed over its planet.
\nAnd a man inside the plane
\nstared transfixed
\nat a vast and terrible beauty,
\nthat left him wondering
\nwhat part of the sunrise
