Who is writing a poem right now?
\nHow many of us are there?
\nOne in ten, in a hundred, in a thousand?
\nAnd what are they writing about?
\nCan they build, paint, compose, invent?<\/p>\n
Why are they using words?
\nLooking into space, measuring distance,
\ngroping for an invisible door?
\nCalling out and following their echo?
\nTrying to pick out something to write about
\nfrom old shirts, faded memories,
\nmountains dissolving into air.
\nOcean sounds that trickle away
\nbarely discernable above a heartbreak.<\/p>\n
And what will they do with their poem?
\nWill anyone read it?
\nHear it recited?
\nHow long will this moment of time endure?
\nAll the hands writing a poem,
\ngazing into the far away reaches of themselves,
\nand turning away from their words
\nlike a campfire gone out,
\nto be discovered as ashes
