{"id":2343,"date":"2012-04-21T02:38:39","date_gmt":"2012-04-21T01:38:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w7m.3ee.myftpupload.com\/?p=2343"},"modified":"2012-04-21T02:38:39","modified_gmt":"2012-04-21T01:38:39","slug":"the-animal-that-knows-death","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theodorewaterfield.com\/?p=2343","title":{"rendered":"The Animal That Knows Death"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We are the animal that knows death.<br \/>\nBehind every step, word,<br \/>\nwe struggle with our oblivion.<br \/>\nWhen did I first know this thing?<br \/>\nIn the old parchment<br \/>\nof my grandmother\u2019s face?<br \/>\nIn the blue rivers of her gnarled hands?<br \/>\nIn the gray silver of her half set eyes,<br \/>\nlike moons with blue halos<br \/>\nand flecks of stone,<br \/>\nof granite from the high cliffs<br \/>\nof her tired stare?<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not sure.<br \/>\nThe dead sparrow<br \/>\ndid not tell me,<br \/>\nthe brown rose,<br \/>\nthe dried body of the bee.<br \/>\nIt all seemed so separate,<br \/>\nlike dead trees<br \/>\nlooming in the woods,<br \/>\nlike furniture.<br \/>\nOne day I awoke<br \/>\nand knew it.<\/p>\n<p>Was it from a story my father told?<br \/>\nThe limestone plaques<br \/>\nin the distant graveyard,<br \/>\nthe moss around their bottoms,<br \/>\nthe lichens crawling over dates<br \/>\nthat had no meaning?<\/p>\n<p>But I knew it,<br \/>\nand wakening,<br \/>\nI numbered my hours,<br \/>\nand drew in my breath.<br \/>\nPerhaps it was a fever,<br \/>\nthe deep, cold ache of flue.<br \/>\nBut it struck me<br \/>\nand I almost succumbed to it,<br \/>\nmy youthful fancy<br \/>\nrent like a rag.<\/p>\n<p>Someday I would die.<br \/>\nNot be old like my grandmother,<br \/>\nor tall and certain like my father.<br \/>\nBut I would die,<br \/>\nand I turned my face to the pillow<br \/>\nunable to breathe,<br \/>\nand I then knew<br \/>\neverything would pass away,<br \/>\nand there was no hope,<br \/>\nso I became the animal<br \/>\nthat knows death,<br \/>\nand nothing was the same again.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We are the animal that knows death.
