{"id":2479,"date":"2016-12-26T01:29:56","date_gmt":"2016-12-26T00:29:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w7m.3ee.myftpupload.com\/?p=2479"},"modified":"2017-04-30T19:58:02","modified_gmt":"2017-04-30T18:58:02","slug":"believe-me","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theodorewaterfield.com\/?p=2479","title":{"rendered":"Believe Me"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What I have put in my journal is true.<br \/>\nThere is no fiction inside me.<br \/>\nOnly my dreams flounder in their stories.<br \/>\nWhen I speak of trains,<br \/>\nthey passed my window as a child.<br \/>\nOur house was thirty feet from tracks.<br \/>\nI grew up with the body odor of machines,<br \/>\nguttural voices.<br \/>\nCoal from boxcars on iron lanes.<br \/>\nThe dank divinity of coal.<br \/>\nStar stones that would glow in our stove<br \/>\nAnd darken the windows with soot.<\/p>\n<p>I grew up with skiffs and sailboats,<br \/>\nsailing above the chop of Sandusky Bay.<br \/>\nThe quick vibration of a boat<br \/>\nin love with the wind.<br \/>\nI grew up trailing my fingers in the water.<br \/>\nLooking into murky corneas of light,<br \/>\ngazing back at my eyes.<br \/>\nI grew up with gravel, verbal wars,<br \/>\nsunflowers that leaned over me<br \/>\nlike old men.<br \/>\nI grew up with broken shoelaces,<br \/>\nwalls that scampered with mice,<br \/>\ntea kettles bubbling above the fire,<br \/>\nscarlet tea steaming in the pot,<br \/>\ntea for breakfast, every hour of the day.<\/p>\n<p>I grew up on moldy words in books.<br \/>\nI explored without understanding the words,<br \/>\nthat lit up like lamps as I learned them.<br \/>\nMy childhood was poor,<br \/>\nviolent,<br \/>\nand sad,<br \/>\nand beautiful, still<br \/>\nwaking me at night,<br \/>\nto see if I am happy.<br \/>\nI am.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What I have put in my journal is true.
