\nwhen dogs swim with owners
\nin the city\u2019s pool,
\non the last pool day of summer.
\nThe pool where Jackie swims,
\nMichael floats, Mark splashes,
\nmothers while away an hour.
\nA foaming surf of arms and fur.
\nWhere men and women
\nbeach themselves like whales
\nwith animals who adore
\nand put up with them.<\/p>\n
Before this day,
\nno dog smell in the water,
\nno admittance to the muzzle
\nthat kisses us,
\nfrolics on the grass,
\nchases us through bushes.
\nNow admitted where there is no admittance.
\nThe last hurrah of summer
\nin our private lake.
\nA fusion of oneness
\nwith those we tolerate and love,
\na swim with pooches.<\/p>\n
Rotund bulldogs,
\nmuscled boxers,
\nspaniels, half breeds and poodles.
\nLike the people of our town,
\nfat, thin, fierce, gentle,
\nlike children let out
\nto share the place we go.
\nFor one great moment,
\nrelived all year in dreams,
\nDog Day Pool Day,
