{"id":2530,"date":"2016-03-12T00:08:11","date_gmt":"2016-03-11T23:08:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w7m.3ee.myftpupload.com\/?p=2530"},"modified":"2016-03-03T04:05:56","modified_gmt":"2016-03-03T03:05:56","slug":"ohio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theodorewaterfield.com\/?p=2530","title":{"rendered":"Ohio"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It is plain, flat country.<br \/>\nIn autumn it\u2019s yellow with wheat.<br \/>\nWinter has a dark peacefulness,<br \/>\nand the lake to the north<br \/>\nis the wall of its world.<br \/>\nConsidering that the earth is mostly blue,<br \/>\nI should have been born in the sea,<br \/>\nand known this land<br \/>\nonly as a mysterious island,<br \/>\nand if I were a sea gull,<br \/>\nI could follow the wind<br \/>\nand see this land and then go home,<br \/>\nand wonder what the land was about.<br \/>\nIts small crevices and moody soul.<\/p>\n<p>The people who watch their clocks<br \/>\nand time their lives.<br \/>\nThe cities that sprawl on the featureless terrain,<br \/>\nand I would shudder to think<br \/>\nthat I lived there,<br \/>\nin a solitary cell of plainness,<br \/>\nwhen everywhere the world<br \/>\ndisplayed the burnt eyes of deserts,<br \/>\nthe bracelets of mountains,<br \/>\nsavannahs and outbacks,<br \/>\nand Taiga and Japanese porcelain.<br \/>\nNothing was conquered here,<br \/>\nand the beauty of the forests<br \/>\nthat lived with sacred secrets,<br \/>\nwere burned and cut,<br \/>\nand the animals slaughtered<br \/>\nwithout sound or fury.<\/p>\n<p>The aboriginals with their baskets<br \/>\nfaded away,<br \/>\nand the Ohio land emerged,<br \/>\nand I was born in its featureless world,<br \/>\nand remain, in love with its homeliness.<br \/>\nIt is a place to begin.<br \/>\nIt is a place I remember.<br \/>\nIt is a place where poems are difficult,<br \/>\nand people unimaginative.<br \/>\nBut it is home,<br \/>\nimprobable in a world with so much sea.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It is plain, flat country.
