{"id":2623,"date":"2016-03-22T01:30:21","date_gmt":"2016-03-22T00:30:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w7m.3ee.myftpupload.com\/?p=2623"},"modified":"2016-03-25T02:39:55","modified_gmt":"2016-03-25T01:39:55","slug":"the-closest-star","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theodorewaterfield.com\/?p=2623","title":{"rendered":"The Closest Star"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Both boys loved each other.<br \/>\nBoth shared brotherhood.<br \/>\nBoth lived in the wickerwork<br \/>\nof war.<br \/>\nTime was lightning and thunder<br \/>\nand nonsense.<br \/>\nThe twenty-one year old,<br \/>\nfurloughed from carnage,<br \/>\nstood by the hospital bed<br \/>\nof his nine year old brother.<br \/>\nThat\u2019s prose.<br \/>\nExplosions kill poetry,<br \/>\nkill children and bewildered men.<\/p>\n<p>The young boy would survive<br \/>\nhis surgery.<br \/>\nThe older brother emptied his<br \/>\npocket of coins.<br \/>\nEverything he had left of life,<br \/>\nand love.<br \/>\nAnd Jack, the older returned<br \/>\nto the storm,<br \/>\nthe little boy to his toys<br \/>\nand pieces of childhood<br \/>\nthat still remained.<\/p>\n<p>Time moved its currents<br \/>\npast other shores.<br \/>\nJack was butchered with his<br \/>\ncomrades in the dark gloom<br \/>\nof winter.<br \/>\nCharles went on to another place,<br \/>\nwork, family.<\/p>\n<p>But in odd places,<br \/>\nat holidays, midnight,<br \/>\nin the courtroom where he worked<br \/>\nthey returned to each other, time on time.<br \/>\nFor an instant,<br \/>\nan imaginal place between them.<br \/>\nThe coins were returned<br \/>\nto Jack\u2019s resting site in Europe.<br \/>\nA white cross at the head<br \/>\nof the war\u2019s lost destinies.<br \/>\nThe closest stars in heaven.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Both boys loved each other.
