Between the oscillations of a
\ndental drill I conjure
\nthe decay from weather
\non the great molars of the vast
\ncordillera of mountains,
\nfrom the Cascades of the north
\nto the seminal Andes of the south.
\nThe gnawing of water,
\nwith its ferocious abrasions
\nfrom relentless storms and showers,
\nthe sweetness of streams
\nand marauding hurricanes.<\/p>\n
The grinding and cracking of ice.
\nThe pale pearls left by the small
\nfragile lives of rodents,
\nconsuming the grain and seeds
\nin the diaspora of life,
\nliving in our shadows.
\nTruth, embedded in the mortuary of rocks,
\nof ages so profound
\nthey seem as if alien to our world.
\nYet in them the wisp of our destiny,
\nthe edible flowers of our creation,
\nascending to poetry.<\/p>\n
These fragmentary thoughts
\noccurring as the dentist works on
\na fault in my teeth.
\nReplacing enamel, so I can
\nin the remaining moments of my life
\nchew on,
\nand be grateful to the skill
\nof her hands and eyes,
\nreturning their ability
\nto crush the fruits and juices
\nof the earth,
\nuntil someone, someday
\nfinds their remnants
