I am approaching the age of empire.
\nDissemination of the gospel.
\nFormation of libraries, museums, ritual.
\nEdifice building.
\nCollections.
\nCollegiate fraternities.
\nMemoirs and revisionist histories.
\nAnd contemplating my arrival,<\/p>\n
I sat in the sun and removed my shirt.
\nThe warmth was softening.
\nEncouraged, I removed my shoes.
\nMy feet sighed, my toes danced,
\nas I thought of empire.
\nI removed my pants
\nand felt the world blow by,
\nand the flag I was hoisting
\nto claim my suzerainty over life,
\nhesitated.<\/p>\n
I looked beyond the flag
\nto the sky,
\nand slowly let it fall.
\nAnother day.
\nAnother ceremony.
\nI walked on the softness of the grass,
\nso immaculate.
\nI sat down,
\nthen stretched out,
\nand wondered at how tall
\nI felt again.<\/p>\n
What was happening?
\nAge fell from my limbs.
\nIn this period of empire,
\nthe success of life,
\nof history,
\nI suddenly wanted to renounce
\nmy claim to glory.
\nWisdom flew from my hands
\nlike a bird liberated.
\nNo more homilies today.
\nNo more telling who, what or when.<\/p>\n
I was tired in a new way.
\nAs if a sweet innocence engulfed me,
\nand I could truly rest,
\nbe restored,
\nlook forward instead of back,
\nand tomorrow sail away from empire
\nand its heavy load.
\nReturn to what I am.
\nA kid just hanging out with friends,
\nmother earth,
