JANUARY 3, 2000
\nIt is a strange date I write.
\nThree days into the new millennium.
\nA thousand years,
\nbirthdays,
\nnew cities,
\nsettling scores.
\nIs it like a thousand miles?
\nA thousand friends,
\na thousand leagues into the sea,
\ninto the heavens?
\nAm I a child of such a vision?
\nBarely able to find my shoes in the morning,
\nsquinting at the dust
\nleft by stars and moonlight,
\nbut to contemplate this new quest,
\nthis huge dimension,
\nthis vault higher than my life,
\nvaster than my dreams.<\/p>\n
I huddle in the covers of a gone century,
\nseeing what we\u2019ve done,
\nso I only ask one thing of our new destiny.
\nOne prayer,
\none hope as I turn the new calendar,
\nmake notes on its pages.
\nIn these last days of our 19th century,
\nwe opened Pandora\u2019s Box,
\nand each new box beget another,
\nand we opened them all,
\nhundreds I think,
\nperhaps a thousand,
\none for each year of the bygone age.
\nCan we in the next thousand years
\nclose them all,
\nnail them down,
\npretend we never peeked,
\nuntil such time
\nwe learn to deal with our greatest gift,
