I can\u2019t stop worrying.
\nIt is an inchoate condition.
\nLife is inherently dangerous
\nso I worry about living.
\nThen I worry about not living.
\nThen I worry about how to live,
\nthe wherefores, the responsibilities.
\nUntil I become cynical.
\nWhat\u2019s a good life?
\nOr a bad life?
\nOr standing in one spot
\nand learning the weather?
\nOr doing something useful
\nlike a lighthouse
\nproviding a landmark.<\/p>\n
I don\u2019t worry if the world will blow up,
\nor blow away.
\nI worry about people,
\ntheir happiness, health.
\nHoping they will not be poor,
\ngrow old,
\ndiscover a fatal flaw and succumb
\nto it.<\/p>\n
Perhaps that\u2019s what I am destined to be,
\na fire alarm,
\na traffic cop,
\na security guard,
\nan organ donator,
\nand at night,
\nbefore I say my prayers
\nfor everybody,
\nto read a last sentence
\nof one of the stories
\nin my book of fairy tales,
