He hunches,
\nlooking into the kingdom
\nof the dirt pile.
\nHis stick furrows
\nbetween sections of sidewalk,
\nas he examines green moss,
\ndiminutive stones,
\nscattering ants,
\nexclaiming, Oh! Oh!
\nCome see Papa!<\/p>\n
And I bend down to his world,
\nthe one I left,
\nand now, am invited to see.
\nYes, Jackie, that\u2019s an ant.
\nWhat a pretty stone!
\nAnd pleased,
\nhe goes on looking into the harps,
\nand horns and mud of the world.
\nThe kingdom of poetry.<\/p>\n
His eyes concentrate.
\nHe goes on as I lift my bulk up,
\na heavy mass of muscle and time.
\nHow privileged I am!
\nHow blessed that he has me!
\nIncludes me!
\nShows me,
\nthe lightness still of my legs,
\nthe shout inside my heart.
\nHow much I can feel for this boy
\nplaying above the basket of the earth.<\/p>\n
Jackie shows me home.
\nPulls me from the distant glance
\nof my eyes.
\nFrom the stare gone inward,
\ninto the wall,
\npast the pictures and songs,
\nuntil I am alone
\nand nowhere.
\nHe pulls me back.<\/p>\n
Not now Papa,
\nhe says with his eyes.
\nBe with me!
\nI am looking into life!
\nInto the center of vastness,
\nand find beautiful toys,
\ntriangles,
\nbits of earth and trees,<\/p>\n
Jackie knows,
\nas I know,
\nlooking after him.<\/p>\n
A grandfather,
\ntouched by the heaven
\ninside his grandson.
\nLoving him,
\ncovered with sun,
\na small voice
\nshowing me our connection
\nto time,
\nto earth,
\nto life,
