I am watching

\npeek from rocks.
\nThey have salt hats
\nand thin eyes of light.
\nLittle voices
\nthat sometimes roar
\nin the waves delight.
\nThey look like crabs
\nwhen the sun recedes,
\npewter spoons
\nwhen the moon comes up.
\nThey have tiny hands
\nthat feel your toes,
\nand tickle the bottom
\nof your feet.<\/p>\n
The Irish have elves,
\nChina, their dragons,
\nIndians,
\nthe voice of spirits
\nexchanging news
\naround campfire dances.
\nBut the beach
\nis a special place
\nwhere shadow people live,
\nwith stories of millennia,
\nand songs
\nthat sing for years,
\nwhen I hear them
\nin the dunes,
\nin a place
\nwhere the ocean
\nfalls away,
\nexcept in shells
