To the west trees are cracking
\nunder ice.
\nTo the east snow is smothering
\nthe shout of joy that greeted it.
\nThe continent is quaking.
\nThere is fear rumbling in the house.
\nHeavy footsteps.
\nSnarling laughter.
\nCyclones of white
\nand walls of wind.
\nAnd the absurd bird of poetry
\nsinging inside me
\nwhen I should be afraid
\nof sharks and shipwrecks.
\nThe cold and the dark.
\nThe angry entrance of the world
\nthrough the door,
\nwhy I hide behind a chair
\nputting a horn to my lips
\nto entice the world to give up
\nits bullying, and dance,
\nand learn how to be gentle
\nand beautiful again,
\nand not make the rafters tremble
