{"id":2919,"date":"2015-03-25T01:52:28","date_gmt":"2015-03-25T00:52:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w7m.3ee.myftpupload.com\/?p=2919"},"modified":"2015-03-05T17:25:24","modified_gmt":"2015-03-05T16:25:24","slug":"extinction-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theodorewaterfield.com\/?p=2919","title":{"rendered":"Extinction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Someday,<br \/>\nthey say with certainty,<br \/>\nanother one will come.<br \/>\nA hard acorn in the heavens.<br \/>\nA piece of flint or sulphur,<br \/>\na mile or two big.<br \/>\nA rock thrown by the black gods<br \/>\nof the asteroid belt,<br \/>\nthe hard leather of creation.<br \/>\nComing like a wild horse,<br \/>\na panther climbing to the zenith,<br \/>\nunseen until it strikes.<\/p>\n<p>And then dear cities of Columbus,<br \/>\nSandusky, Rome and London,<br \/>\nall the junkyards, gardens,<br \/>\nSodoms and Gomorrahs,<br \/>\nwill no longer light the night.<br \/>\nToward the moon,<br \/>\na dark fog will ascend,<br \/>\nand the remarkable children,<br \/>\nthe magnolia, the violin,<br \/>\nwill no longer be seen or heard.<br \/>\nThe earth will cover itself with dust,<br \/>\nwith a shroud of mourning,<br \/>\nand our prayers will be vapor,<br \/>\nrain like everyone\u2019s tears.<\/p>\n<p>And we will no longer worry<br \/>\nabout the final dawn,<br \/>\nsilent widows,<br \/>\norphaned children.<br \/>\nSymphonies will hearken<br \/>\nin the distance,<br \/>\nlike sad bells.<br \/>\nOnly starlight will record<br \/>\nwhat was here.<\/p>\n<p>All the poems will be burned,<br \/>\nthe woman will no longer<br \/>\ncall to her lover,<br \/>\nand no one will wonder<br \/>\nto what purpose,<br \/>\nGod has made himself.<br \/>\nA wind calling over bare rock<br \/>\nand shorn precipice.<br \/>\nThe ocean silent for unknown ages,<br \/>\nuntil small seeds of spring come back,<br \/>\nand a new wakefulness begins.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Someday, they say with certainty, another one will come.
