Things have a place.
\nDon\u2019t matter what it is
\nso much as where it is.
\nSavannah was meant to be
\nalong this shore,
\nwith the river and islands.
\nThe sea birds flying over the marshes.
\nThey still do.
\nIt seemed right.
\nLike a child born to the right family.
\nAnd Savannah grew up to be a proud child,
\nnotable and sensitive.
\nAnd that\u2019s how fine things happen
\nto children and to towns.<\/p>\n
Works like that everywhere I suppose.
\nWe\u2019ve got soldiers, writers, artists,
\nand our share of scalawags.
\nThe graveyards are full of them.
\nMy grandmother was sure I\u2019d amount
\nto something.
\nYou have good blood she\u2019d tell me.
\nJust don\u2019t disgrace yourself.
\nAnd I\u2019d listen and nod,
\nand look at her plate of cookies
\nand she\u2019d smile and give me one.
\nAnd I\u2019d smile because she smiled,
\nand loved me.<\/p>\n
I would find my place
\nand grandmother would be proud of me,
\nbecause I wasn\u2019t going to jail,
\nand I loved where I was.
\nI promised her I\u2019d write things down
\nand tell people about grandpa.
\nThat he was a gentleman
\nand a credit to our southern tradition.
\nI hope everything happens again.
\nThen I can grow up twice.<\/p>\n
I always set a place at table
\nfor grandma,
\npretending she might come
\nto breakfast.
\nA place for her like everything else,
\nand things happen.
\nAt night when I\u2019m dreaming
\nthere\u2019s a song outside,
\nand she says
