{"id":3027,"date":"2016-04-24T01:08:25","date_gmt":"2016-04-24T00:08:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w7m.3ee.myftpupload.com\/?p=3027"},"modified":"2016-04-17T21:54:35","modified_gmt":"2016-04-17T20:54:35","slug":"to-be-forgiven","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theodorewaterfield.com\/?p=3027","title":{"rendered":"To Be Forgiven"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FROM SAVANNA IDYLL<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes my youth returns.<br \/>\nThe maypole sprouts its girls.<br \/>\nAtoms explode in my heart.<br \/>\nThen I realize<br \/>\nthis old city isn\u2019t old.<br \/>\nIt has no gift for dying.<br \/>\nI think,<br \/>\nlike everything eternal,<br \/>\nit was never meant to go away.<br \/>\nIt had a hard birth.<br \/>\nIt faced the corruption of Sherman.<br \/>\nIts boys died in the fields<br \/>\nwith Yankee boys,<br \/>\nand the Lord cried for all of them.<\/p>\n<p>Savannah was spared the torch,<br \/>\nlike a life that says<br \/>\nI will live every last moment of myself.<br \/>\nAnd people knew it.<br \/>\nThe people from the north<br \/>\ngrow quiet here.<br \/>\nTheir faces get young.<br \/>\nHardness goes away and<br \/>\nthey look at the moss and smile.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ve never seen anything prettier<br \/>\nthan our girls.<br \/>\nHeard English said<br \/>\nlike it should be said.<br \/>\nWatch gardens taking time<br \/>\nto put color in their flowers,<br \/>\nand I\u2019m sure<br \/>\nthey take back part of us,<br \/>\na piece of the south.<\/p>\n<p>A little more courtesy<br \/>\ntoward one another.<br \/>\nWalking more quietly<br \/>\nso the birds don\u2019t fly away.<br \/>\nThen to know<br \/>\nit\u2019s normal to be smart.<br \/>\nTo feel like a boy or girl.<br \/>\nAnd maybe<br \/>\nwhat should have been,<br \/>\na world decent in its treatment of others,<br \/>\nstarts with the day,<br \/>\nand goes to bed<br \/>\nlike a child at peace<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FROM SAVANNA IDYLL Sometimes my youth returns.
