When I die
\nI want to be outside
\nhaving a glass of sweet tea,
\nalthough living is more important
\nthan dying,
\nand going to a party
\nmore important than staying home.
\nThe problem with dying is,
\nyou do it once,
\nwhere living is an oyster roast,
\nprying out the goodness of something,
\none bite at a time,
\nthen making buttons
\nout of the shells,
\nand digesting the food
\nas fast as you eat it.<\/p>\n
The South has a gift
\nfor sucking the goodness from things,
\nand if you don\u2019t rile them,
\na southern person\u2019s as sweet as a clam.
\nThere\u2019s a lot of poetry in us.
\nWomen set the table with flowers.
\nOur children,
\nwhen properly reared,
\nhave manners better than royalty.<\/p>\n
I suppose it\u2019s civilization,
\nand letting things mature.
\nTo appreciate.
\nTo listen
\nand enjoy the words of another.
\nAnd no excess.
\nToo much beer or wine.
\nArguing politics,
\nspeaking loud or taking offense.<\/p>\n
We are a very young people
\nin some ways.
\nSoulful and proud,
\nand playful.
\nWhat will happen as time goes by,
\nI don\u2019t know.
\nMaybe the people that come here
\nwill change us less than we change them.
\nEverything for the good.
\nAnd if we come back from the graveyard
\nnow and then,
\nthings will still taste like sweet tea,
