He sees white sea gulls
\nfluttering above him.
\nLike sheets of poetry.
\nIf he could catch them
\nhe would not have to write
\nhis own poems.
\nHe could read their lines,
\nlike songs singing in seashells.
\nPeople would be amazed
\nand ask where the words
\ncame from,
\nand in innocence he would say,
\nI read them from pages of the sky
\nthat fell on me.<\/p>\n
And they would shake their heads
\nand exclaim,
\nhe is crazy,
\nbut then he is a poet.
\nThe poems are beautiful,
\nthey would tell him,
\ngo back and find some more
\nfor our journals and letters,
\npoems to recite at birthdays
\nand graves.<\/p>\n
And the child would look at them
\nand say to himself,
\nthey are crazy,
\nbut they are big,
\nand I do not understand everything
\nthey say.
\nAnd he would run off
\nand catch poems flying in the air,
\nto fall into his heart\u2019s imagination,
\nand cry
