A sea daisy blooms in the sea grass
\nbehind me.
\nOn the long coast,
\nthe wind is an attenuated feather
\nof sound.
\nIt will persist until it has circled
\nthe world.
\nIt will persist to Africa
\nand lay its invisible body on the desert there.
\nPiece by piece it will shed its single note.<\/p>\n
The sea daisy will display itself for a day,
\nor another, and then
\na blank space will tempt our eyes
\nto believe it is flowering in the dark.
\nIts simplicity will exhaust itself,
\nand my eyes will close.
\nWhen I open them
\nnothing will remain in me,
\nexcept a scrap of paper.<\/p>\n
What traveled past me
\nwhen I wrote these words?
\nDid I miss the collision of a star?
\nNot see a mermaid appear from the waves
\nand beckon?
\nDid a plane crash in the sea
\npast the horizon,
\nand the last moment for a hundred souls
\nwas the memory of a single night
\ndrowning in the water.
