{"id":3240,"date":"2016-05-12T01:33:13","date_gmt":"2016-05-12T00:33:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w7m.3ee.myftpupload.com\/?p=3240"},"modified":"2016-05-03T16:03:52","modified_gmt":"2016-05-03T15:03:52","slug":"return-to-sicily","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theodorewaterfield.com\/?p=3240","title":{"rendered":"Return to Sicily"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>These fine peasants that left their Sicily!<br \/>\nTheir wandering roads,<br \/>\nvines, overturned columns of Phoenicia,<br \/>\nthe blood of tribes<br \/>\nthat pushed their ships from the sand<br \/>\nand danced under gulls,<br \/>\nsinging the poetry of blue hills<br \/>\nlapis lazuli sea,<br \/>\nand came to the hard fortress<br \/>\nof the New World.<\/p>\n<p>Traded the warmth of their blood heritage<br \/>\nfor the gray towers of New York,<br \/>\nthe forbidding armies<br \/>\nof tired, frightened faces<br \/>\nlooking for a dream,<br \/>\nsomewhere in the dirt and gravel<br \/>\nof this ominous world.<br \/>\nOh Rosa, with warm breasts,<br \/>\nthe smell of gardens!<br \/>\nAntonio, with your hands<br \/>\nsoiled with the truth of Sicily\u2019s soil,<br \/>\nher fleet of ships<br \/>\ncoming to harbor with holds of fish,<br \/>\nwine, grown on the sides of sun covered hills.<\/p>\n<p>The laughter of children,<br \/>\nfaces moist, warm as doves<br \/>\nheld to the cheek.<br \/>\nChildren with a thousand years of faith,<br \/>\nthe brocade of women taking them to church,<br \/>\nwith families exchanging greetings,<br \/>\ntouching hands,<br \/>\nsmiling with the faith of an old land.<br \/>\nEternally in love,<br \/>\na people holding each other,<br \/>\nwiping away grudges with tears,<br \/>\ncome to the chill of New England.<br \/>\nTheir clothes ragged, covering confusion.<\/p>\n<p>Where is the sun?<br \/>\nWhere is the embrace of friends,<br \/>\nthe ancient lineage of our lives,<br \/>\nthe deep well of love and courage<br \/>\nthat fought invaders,<br \/>\nthe eruption of volcanoes,<br \/>\nearthquakes.<br \/>\nFlowers on every sill,<br \/>\nthe blessing of priests,<br \/>\nthe sharing of wine and water?<\/p>\n<p>Little Italy,<br \/>\nwith its bright flags<br \/>\nover the wasted ruins of a slum.<br \/>\nThe joining of hands,<br \/>\nthe marshaling of hope on door steps,<br \/>\ncalling from windows,<br \/>\nhow is your son?<br \/>\nIs your daughter betrothed?<br \/>\nHas your husband returned from the west?<br \/>\nAnd frightened,<br \/>\nlove that passed between souls in the night.<\/p>\n<p>It will get better.<br \/>\nAnd the resolve, above pots of geranium,<br \/>\nto go west,<br \/>\nto the inland states of Ohio, Pennsylvania.<br \/>\nCan we plant our vines?<br \/>\nWill the olives grow?<br \/>\nDo the factories pay?<br \/>\nCan our little ones succeed?<br \/>\nHang on.  Hang on.<br \/>\nStay in contact, write, call,<br \/>\na neighborhood here and there,<br \/>\nuntil we\u2019re on our feet,<br \/>\nand we come home to Sicily in our hearts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>These fine peasants that left their Sicily!
