Waiting for Jack

\nI read the pages of eternity
\non its walls.
\nFossils in the limestone blocks
\nthat construct it.
\nThe sediment of the sea
\nthat covered this place.<\/p>\n
Mussels and fans,
\nribs of circular planets,
\npieces that connect
\nand disconnect.
\nSpring light shining on
\ntheir dry remains.<\/p>\n
Beautiful little lives.
\nIn the split second they lived,
\nI see a hundred million springs
\ncome and gone.
\nJackie and I now share a few.
\nA wisp of life
\ncounted on our hands.<\/p>\n
Where will the remains of our dreams go?
\nHow will our smiles be traced?
\nWill our voices make a sound
\nin a hundred million years?
\nWill the universe
\nunderstand our love?<\/p>\n
Will a child understand
\nthe fossil in its hand?
\nSee the contour of a face

\nin a time unbelievably far away?
