The heat goes on and on.
\nThe grinding of bulldozers
\nat the end of the street,
\nwaterlines, hydrants going in.
\nThe school is covered
\nwith the dust of July.
\nI could endure the dirt, the noise,
\nthe smell of concrete,
\nif Jackie and I could go to the play park
\nand swing and slide.<\/p>\n
We are children of summer,
\nfestivals,
\nday lengthening in jewels of light,
\nmirrors in the street,
\nbreezes full of honeysuckle air,
\nsunflowers rising in the garden.
\nI told Jackie, this second year,
\nlisten to the breathing of flowering dragons,
\nof swan like birds,
\nof bats gliding in the moonlight,
\nfireflies sprinkling the galaxy.
\nAll that is summer,
\nsummer land.<\/p>\n
Then the machines came,
\nthe violent weather of rocks
\nbroken by bulldozers,
\nof cranes lifting their dinosaur necks
\nlooking for prey,
\nvolcanoes erupting,
\nand the roar of dry hurricanes
\nand tornadoes.
\nWhat will he remember next year?<\/p>\n
It will be calm and green,
\nand dandelions will flood the grass,
\nand silence
\nwill hang like blue silk in the sky,
\nand the monsters will have gone
\nto their yellow mountains of rock,
\nwhere they live.
\nAnd PaPa will explain,
\nthat summer took a voyage
\nto the end of the world,
\nto find its birds and clouds
\nall whole and perfect,
